Conference: The Future for Sustainable Built Environments with High Performance Energy Systems

Conference 19th – 21th October 2010
Oskar von Miller Forum
Munich, Germany

This conference about the future for sustainable built environments and energy systems integrating a maximum amount of renewable energies provides front-edge technologies and solutions for buildings, communities and energy supply. In addition to the presentation of new results and technologies this is an opportiny for personal exchange with participants from politics, research institutions and industry. The conference therefore creates the chance for an open interdisciplinary dicussion on how to address the upcoming challenges of energy trasition.

ReSource

Initiative ReSource derives from a fact, that the majority of coal-mining towns face serious problems. And from a fact, that things are relative. Everything that seems a problem today can as well be seen as a challenge: former gangue dumping grounds can become biomass producers, minors’ dwellings and tradition can become a tourist attraction… But radical changes cannot happen overnight and on their own. A lot of fresh ideas have to be tracked down and well weighed before use.

Partners are entering the ReSource project with their own knowledge, experience and ideas to confront them to that coming from other latitudes trying to find the shortest ways to make their regions attractive and competitive. Fundamental directions are focused on the use of natural resources such as geothermal energy and biomass, identification of cultural characteristics and their inclusion in the tourist programmes, rational use of space and renovation of buildings.

As two heads are better than one partners decided to unite forces in implementation of different activities like organisation of summer schools or defining studies. The results of common actions will represent effective ground for a long-term development of former mining regions. International environment offers each partner an opportunity to check its past actions and at the same time upgrade their future activities with experience and know how of other regions.
The project includes ten partners from five countries. The project was launched on the 1st of January 2009 and will be finished on 31st of March 2012. The project whose overall budget exceeds 3 million EURO is co-financed by European Regional Development Fund within the Central Europe Programme.

The ReSource project was launched on the 1st of January 2009 and will be finished on the 31st of March 2012.

Partners
ReSource is initiative of seven regions from five countries sharing similar problem: finding the best possibilities for quality coexistence with the former and somewhere still existing mining. Three scienitific institutions decided to take part in finding out solutions from the blind alleys and answers to the questions of urban and regional development.

The remaining six regional partners are:

  • District Chemnitzer Land, Economic Region from Germany
  • IBA Furst-Puckler-Land from Germany
  • Centre for Entrepise and Technology, Mansfelder Land from Germany
  • Strysian Eisenstrasse Society from Austria
  • micro-regionSokolov-Ost from Czech Republic
  • City of Salgotarjan from Hungary
  • Regionalni center za razvoj Zagorje from Slovenia

And the scientific partners are:

  • Leibniz Institute of Ecological and Regional Development from Germany
  • Karl-Franzens University Graz from Austria
  • Urbanisticni institut Ljubljana from Slovenia

Date: 23rd – 25th March 2009
Place: Zwickau

Project Results

Many different studies will be prepared in within the ReSource project. First of them will be prepared and available in the year 2010

Integrative approaches will bring master plans for the coal-mining sites, proposals
for recultivation and renovation of urban mining settlements
Natural potentials will mainly be focused on the themes like biomass and geothermal energy
Cultural potentials will contain strategies and concepts for utilization of regional mining heritage, history trails and tourist routes
Scientific support will include strategic guidelines for next decade, innovative approaches and recommendations for utilisation of post-mining potentials
